SUMMARY

A vinyl-format publication documenting my first journey to Maluku, arriving somewhere that had always existed through stories. Photography, sequencing and object design come together to shape my journey into a physical narrative.

SUMMARY

I grew up hearing about Maluku through family stories, photographs and the names of places I had never seen for myself. In April 2025, I travelled there for the first time, visiting Ema on Ambon, where my family comes from.

During the trip I photographed the moments that stayed with me most. Family life, food, the kampong, places people wanted to show me and the smaller moments in between. Even when we did not always share the same language, there were other ways of understanding each other. Photography became a way for me to document a place I had known through stories for years, while finally experiencing it for myself.

THE FORMAT

Rather than presenting the photographs as a traditional photobook, the publication takes the form of a 12-inch record sleeve. A different kind of record, using a familiar format designed to be held, collected and returned to.

THE COVER

The cover uses a map of Maluku, giving context to the journey and offering an overview of the places documented throughout the publication. It also shows where some of the photographs were taken, connecting the images back to the locations they came from.
